GOLD
When I was a child used to play in the piazza del Duomo in Orvieto where I was born. The gold of the mosaics shining from façade of the cathedral must have started in my heart a sort alchemical process. Gold is in the medieval world the only tangible representation of the spiritual light. Gold is the way the Byzantine painters used in order to transcend the reality. A gold background solves any perspective in an abstract dimension of light. I feel a healing energy radiating from a painting with gold leaf inside. It is not a coincidence that in the sixth and seventh century gold believed to have prophylactic power. So I work with gold in my paintings and when I am writing icons I feel the magic of it. Gold does not even need light: the flame of a candle gives to the surface powerful vibration of life.
